Elected to City Council, 5th District at-Large in 2007, Cindy represents the "whole" of Kansas City, as well as 5th district residents and is elected by the entire city. While Cindy has worked hard to address the critical needs of the 5th district, she has also supported programs and policies that benefit all Kansas Citians. Cindy knows that positive leadership, centered on listening and collaboration - not divisive politics - is what will move Kansas City in the right direction.
For the past four years, Cindy has used her positive leadership, along with her experience as a small business owner and neighborhood leader, to work with her Council colleagues, city staff and community leaders to find real solutions for the issues facing our city. Her approach is delivering results, including streamlining some of the permitting processes for small businesses; creating a neighborhood leader training program; and creating and providing the start-up money from her office budget for a neighborhood tire clean-up initiative.
During her first year in office, Cindy led the successful renewal of the 1/4-cent public improvements sales tax, which generates essential funding for basic repairs and improvements to streets, curbs, sidewalks, storm sewers, parks and trails. Cindy was instrumental in the re-establishment of a Housing Department in Kansas City. Her efforts to strengthen our city have not gone unrecognized. In 2009, she received the Community Housing Network's Public Service Award and the KC Industrial Council's Brick by Brick Award.
