John Sharp has spent decades serving south Kansas City, both as a volunteer and as an elected official.
John is the current 6th District (in-district) City Councilperson following his election in 2007. He formerly served two terms as 6th District Councilperson, five terms in the Missouri House of Representatives and two terms on the Hickman Mills Board of Education. He has a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Kansas and a Master of Public Administration degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and has served as an adjunct faculty member at several area colleges.
During this term on the City Council, John led the successful fight to save over 2,000 good paying jobs in south Kansas City by approving a new site for the National Nuclear Security Administration. He also sponsored one of the toughest ordinances to regulate billboards in the state that has halted the proliferation of billboards in Kansas City. Recently, John sponsored the ordinance that revised the city’s antiquated liquor licensing laws to allow Trader Joe’s, a specialty grocery chain expected to draw shoppers from at least 100 miles away, to open a store at Ward Parkway Shopping Center.
If reelected, John intends to focus on cleaning up the former Bannister Mall site and the contamination at the Bannister Federal Complex so both these areas can be successfully redeveloped; passing new state economic development incentives so we can compete on a level playing field with Kansas to attract and retain jobs; and assuring the Police Department has adequate financial resources to crackdown on crime, particularly homicides and home burglaries.
